What Makes A Leader?

“I am thankful to those people who didn’t try. It is because of them I succeeded.”

Einstein was absolutely right. Leaders are not Martians. They have two eyes, one nose and two ears but what separates them from others is effort and determination. Leaders struggle throughout their lives to convert dreams into reality and are not put off when people label them as “eccentric”. It is their boldness to be different which makes them such an icon.

A leader is someone who people look upto because of his individuality. He is an innovator. He not only dreams it, he becomes it. He is able to inculcate his uniqueness into his successors. He leaves a new generation of real leaders behind him, to follow in his footsteps. And not just one, not just two….. ….

It takes a lot to make a leader. The notion that leadership is an inbuilt phenomenon is drivel. Rather leadership is infused into the person while he is growing up. A lot of effort and energy goes into the production of leaders. They are groomed by exceptional people around them: great parents, dedicated teachers and an encouraging society.

Leaders are not born. They are made. They are made just like anything else . . . through hard work. That's the price we have to pay to achieve that goal or any goal. - Vince Lombardi
.
Leaders are mirror images of the society they represent. That is because they arise from the society. Whenever, the society starts changing its view, the attitude of leaders also changes.
Leadership is not a one-day thing. It is a constant commitment to excellence, a habit . . . a daily practice. It is the ability to go through troubled times and as Winston Churchill put it

“Never . . . Never . . . Never . . . Never Give up!”

Thus, a leader is a picture of effort, determination, boldness, innovation, principles and commitment. He is a trend setter, a bold decision maker. He accomplishes great things and inspires others to grow in responsibility and skills. He acquires these qualities during his childhood by constant interaction with the society. When he becomes an adult, these characteristic become a part of his genome. He cannot deviate from it. Leaders are made by the society itself. If the ambitious youth are encouraged by the society, then only will great leaders be produced because leaders have to be groomed just like doctors, engineers, and businessmen.

Ten Things We Waste - A FWD email

1. Our Knowledge: Wasted by not taking action with it ..... more

2. Our Actions: Wasted by committing them without sincerity.

3. Our Wealth: Wasted by using on things that will not bring us ajr (reward from Allah). We waste our money, our status, our authority, on things which have no benefit in this life or in akhirah (hereafter).

4. Our Hearts: Wasted because they are empty from the love of Allah, and the feeling of longing to go to Him, and a feeling of peace and contentment. In it's place, our hearts are filled with something or someone else.

5. Our Bodies: Wasted because we don't use them in ibadah (worship) and service of Allah.

6. Our Love: Our emotional love is misdirected, not towards Allah, but towards something/someone else.

7. Our Time: Wasted, not used properly, to compensate for that which has passed, by doing what is righteous to make up for past deeds.

8. Our Intellect: Wasted on things that are not beneficial, that are detrimental to society and the individual, not in contemplation or reflection.

9. Our Service: Wasted in service of someone who will not bring us closer to Allah, or benefit in dunyaa.

10. Our Zhikr (Remembrence of Allah): Wasted, because it does not effect us or our hearts.

Authors: Sara Ijaz Gilani, Sana Ali, Sarah Tahir Mir, Tooba Mazhar, Aftab Iqbal, Faheem Ahmed, Abeera Zareen, Omar Hyder
Institution: Rawalpindi Medical College, Rawalpindi

Background: The use of alternative medicine has been found to be a prevalent practice in the management of hepatitis world wide. Several clinical trials are being conducted to evaluate its efficacy, safety and interaction with medical therapy.
Objectives: The prevalence of alternative treatment in hepatitis patients in Pakistan has not been documented in published literature. We conducted a cross sectional survey in out patient setting in a hospital in Rawalpindi to find out its prevalence.
Method: Face to face interviews were conducted with 78 patients presenting in Liver Clinic of Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi. A structured questionnaire containing both open ended and closed ended questions was administered. Results were analyzed using frequency and percentage calculations.
Results: The patients in our study group predominantly (65%) suffered from HCV infection. Among the respondents 58% (n=45) were female and 42% (n=33) were male. Mean age was 43 years. Majority of them (51%) were illiterate with average monthly household income of 3000-7000 Rs. (47%).
77% (n=60) of the patients claimed using alternative medicine for hepatitis at some stage during illness Use of Quranic verses (Dam/ Darood) was the most prevalent (75%,n=50) followed by Hakim (45%,n=27) and Homeopathic (43%,n=26) medicines. The major reasons cited for using alternative medicine was high cost of conventional medicine (67%) followed by recommendations from other patients(48%).50% people believed in the effectiveness of alternative medicine and 25% doubted the efficacy of conventional treatment.13% feared the adverse effects of medical therapy. The major source of information for alternative medicine was friends and family. 65% claimed using a combination of alternative and conventional therapy and majority of them (67%) had not informed their doctor about its concurrent use. The reason for seeking conventional therapy was dissatisfaction with the alternative therapy (37%) followed by increased severity of symptoms (30%) and advice of others (17%).
Conclusion:Doctors need to be aware of all therapeutic modalities used by their patients to prevent any drug interactions. The cost of medical treatment for hepatitis is found to be the greatest obstacle in obtaining conventional treatment. The treatment seeking behavior of the patient is influenced by hearsay, advice from other patients and the community.

Euphoria!!!!!!

Wow!! Feels like I'm living a dream. What started out as a simple phonecall from my senior to participate in the organization of the PSGW turned out into one of the most memorable experience of my life. I got to meet some of the biggest names in the field of medicine like Professor Mario Rizzetto (Italy) and Professor Graham Foster (UK). That's beside seeing the big guns in action live like Professor David Carr-Locke (USA-Harvard), Professor Masao Omata(Japan) and countless more. And plus our study got third place in the Young Researcher Category. I'll write more about it once the euphoria wears off :)

Writing Blues!!

I don’t feel like writing these days maybe because I’m going through so much at this time. From the tension of the impeding result doom to being in the Student’s Organizing Committee of an international conference being held by the Pakistan Society of Gastroenterologists. Also have to write something for the college magazine “SHIFA”. I guess writing is something that is freelance. An expression of emotions and thoughts put to words, and it can’t be forced!!!! So till I get my emotional roller coaster back on track, it’s adios from my side!

Holes

Nobody's there when you need them, simply because everybody cares about themselves. They only need you to be there as their ladder. Then when they reach the top and you stick your hand out so they can help you out of the hole, they turn their back and walk away. And you're left alone in that dark hole witbout an ounce of hope. That's when you wish you'd payed more attention to your life than other peoples' lives and had done something so you'd be strong enough to get out of that hole.

Fantasy Unplugged!

If I thought that nothing could beat that UEFA Champions League win of Liverpool in Istanbul last year, I was wrong. Imagine a team making 434 runs in an One Day International and still losing!! That's what happened to Australia today. South Africa chased down 434. True, sometimes reality is harder to believe than fantasy!!!!!!

Small Goals vs. Large Goals

I remember watching an interview of Sanath Jaysuria, a devastating opening batsman from Sri Lanka. He said something of the sorts

" I like setting small targets and achieving them. I don't go for big targets but break them up into smaller ones and move on."

And I think this is the way we should live our lives. Instead of aiming for a single big target in life, we should set small goals. Only on achieving those small goals, we should set new ones and move forward. This is much more fulfilling, rewarding and less exasperating.

Sports Week

Have had a cold for the last few days. It's when you yourself get sick that you realize we take our health for granted. We fail to realize that every organ of the body is as important as the other, be it the nose or the heart..hehe.
Sports week starts from tomorrow, so a welcome break from studies. This will be one week in which we can forget about all the diseases & clinical methods and for once enjoy the little things in life. However there is this one teeny weeny problem. Our result might be coming this week too. So if it doesn't come out good, we'll be deprived of our ONE WEEK of freedom. InshaAllah, it will come out good. Supplies are so what we don't need now!!!!!

Life Today

Read this on a friend’s profile

Don’t take life seriously. Nobody gets through alive anyways.

Finished Erich Segal's Love Story and Only Love. Love Story disappointed me. Not as great as people portray it to be, or maybe it isn't my taste. But Only Love was awesome. A must read.
