I remember watching an interview of Sanath Jaysuria, a devastating opening batsman from Sri Lanka. He said something of the sorts
" I like setting small targets and achieving them. I don't go for big targets but break them up into smaller ones and move on."
And I think this is the way we should live our lives. Instead of aiming for a single big target in life, we should set small goals. Only on achieving those small goals, we should set new ones and move forward. This is much more fulfilling, rewarding and less exasperating.
